Story from the gator…

I came across this blog tonight as I was finally able to get back to my gator (see “hyperventilation” post).

Last spring in class, I learned about flat-walled classrooms.  I thought this was a wonderful idea and was drawn to the fact that this would help my students learn not only about their peers in other places, but also about the world around them.

Audrey has prepared a wiki about her idea for this classroom.  Here are just a few of her ideas…

The purpose of this project is help students to:

1) identify and become knowledgable about issues that are important in the world around them,

6) use their tools to write and speak effectively on an issue

7) learn to use multiple literacies (image, sound, tempo) to communicate effectively

As I stated, these are just a few of her ideas for the flat-walled classroom.  This would work wonderfully into the 7th and 8th grade KY Core Content in that students are learning about persuasion.  This would allow them to work with other students in other areas, while learning how to persuade, support, write, and use technology more efficiently.  I just might look into this.

My only concern would be the amount of time it would take and if I could persuade the powers that be to allow me to take on the task in my own classroom.  I’ll keep you posted on my decision.
